Time to renew your ISST membership for 2017, and continue to enjoy member exclusives, like Wendy Behary's Keynote Address at INSPIRE 2016 in Vienna.

"Harnessing a Sturdy & Effective Empathically Attuned Caregiver Mode in the Treatment Room"

    Keynote by Wendy T. Behary

~Empathy is not just a therapeutic skill; it is a basic relationship process~*

The data suggests that empathically attuned resonance generates an emotionally robust healing link in the therapy relationship, necessary for change to occur.

Triggered by schemas and modes in the treatment room, therapists can become distracted—preoccupied with vulnerability, emotional safety, or incompetence; held hostage by our own once-upon-a-time early experiences, thus hindering the empathically attuned stance of the adaptive caregiving mode.

Decentering ourselves in the treatment room involves emotionally protecting our vulnerable side without completely muting our realness when activated by implicit and explicit conditions that might overwhelm and distract us from an otherwise sturdy and empathic posture.
    *(Bohart&Greenberg, et al., 1997)

Wendy T. Behary: as the founder and director of The Cognitive Therapy Center of New Jersey and The New Jersey Institute for Schema Therapy, Wendy has been treating clients, training professionals, and supervising psychotherapists for more than 20 years.

Wendy served as the President of the Executive Board for the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) from 2010 to 2014, and is currently the chair of the Brainstorming Sub-Committee for ISST.

Wendy specializes in treating narcissists, and the people who live with and deal with them. She has co-authored several chapters and articles on Schema Therapy and Cognitive Therapy, and is the author of Disarming the Narcissist, now translated in 10 languages and in its second edition (New Harbinger, 2013).

Wendy lectures both nationally and internationally to professional and general audiences, and her private practice is located in Springfield, New Jersey.

"A designer knows he (or she) has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

Does Antoine de Saint-Exupery's definition of engineering excellence apply to schema therapy?

    PLENARY PANEL

    INSPIRE 2016 FEATURE

"Schemas versus modes: is it really a contest?"

    Moderator: Wendy Behary

Presenters: Jeff Young, Joan Farrell, David Bernstein, Jeff Conway and Cathy Flanagan

We know that from its inception the concept of the schema, a deeply entrenched pattern that is experienced cognitively, emotionally, and somatically, has been central to the schema therapy model. However, as the model has evolved, the status of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) has changed, and some would suggest, diminished, as mode work has become a more dominant aspect of schema therapy. This panel discussion will consider the history of the model and EMS, as well as the development of modes and the interaction of EMS and modes.

It is widely believed and accepted in the schema therapy community that modes have become the best way to understand and treat someone with a characterological disorder. In fact, mode work has promoted meaningful breakthroughs with very challenging cases. However, it has left some to wonder about the value and usefulness of EMS in the treatment room. The question remains: is it therefore still necessary to consider schemas when treating someone, or in fact, have schemas become "out-moded?" This panel intends to grapple with this question.

One side of the debate contends that EMS remain an essential part of the therapeutic collaboration for schema healing. The other side of the debate will contend that EMS are not as essential as they once were, and therefore should be limited to the assessment phase, while the most important work lies in identifying and addressing mode shifts and mode adaptations.

    JEFF YOUNG

    WELCOME ADDRESS

Jeff Young, the founder of Schema Therapy, presents his welcome address for INSPIRE 2016 at the ISST Vienna World Conference. Dr. Young describes an expansion of the schema therapy model in a way that integrates both schemas and modes. He uses the General Adaptation Syndrome, developed by Nobel Prize nominee Hans Selye, to describe how the body fights to maintain homeostasis, but when overwhelmed, deteriorates.

Dr. Young discusses ways in which our core needs may be unmet, and provides antidotes through schema therapy, using a framework that integrates schemas and modes, into a model that promotes emotional and physical homeostasis.
