Schema Therapy in Forensic Settings with Kerry Beckley

London: 8th & 9th April 2019 (1 day, £190; 2 days £335)

Forensic settings provide particular challenges when applying Schema Therapy. Typically, the client group is highly complex and diverse, and the settings in which therapy is undertaken can be restrictive and potentially reinforcing of individuals’ early adverse experiences.  Challenges are also faced in public and professional narratives regarding individuals who have caused significant harm to others, for example their right to care and compassion may be questioned.  Navigating forensic contexts from a reparenting stance can feel unsafe for practitioners if the approach is not understood by the environment.

These two days are aimed at clinicians who work with clients in forensic settings.  A basic knowledge of Schema Therapy is required.

Day 1: Individual work with forensic clients, including:

Particular challenges of engagement
Working with forensic modes
The safe use of limited reparenting and empathic confrontation

Day 2: Systemic issues and team working, including:

The extension of limited reparenting via teams
Schema-informed formulation and consultation
Using schema-informed conversations in practice

Dr Kerry Beckley is a Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical and Forensic) and the current Chair of the Faculty of Forensic Clinical Psychology.  She is an Accredited Schema Trainer/Supervisor in Individual and Group Schema Therapy and a full member of the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST). She is the current chair of the ISST's Group Schema Therapy Training and Board Elections Committees. She has worked in various forensic settings developing Schema Therapy services and schema-informed practice. She has published and presented on forensic Schema Therapy for many years both nationally and internationally.
